Unique gearing puts more torque to the ground than the regular Hellcat

Dodge announced that the dragstrip-ready tires allow the Demon to handle higher launch torque loads, so the automaker added in more torque multiplication. The «regular» Hellcat gets incredibly long-legged 2.62 rear end gearing with the automatic transmission; the Demon, which we assume will be available with an automatic only, will get shorter 3.09 gearing and a higher stall speed torque converter. Between the transmission, the rear end gear, and the big bad tires, Dodge says the Demon will have «more than twice as much grip,» with a 15-percent larger tire contact patch; the transmission gives roughly 18 percent more converter torque multiplication, while the gearing creates an equal boost in rear axle torque multiplication. We leave it to the eggheads to calculate what that all amounts to.

«These upgrades alone enable the Challenger SRT Demon to generate more than 35 percent higher launch force than a Challenger Hellcat,» Dodge writes, «and there are seven weeks to go.»

2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Horsepower

The Dodge Demon, on 91 pump gas, makes 808 horsepower. On 100 octane race gas it makes 840 horsepower. It makes 770 lb-ft of torque.

At this point, we don’t know how much the horsepower and torque the Demon will make. Presumably, the new car will make more power than the 707 horsepower that the Hellcat currently makes, but at this point Dodge hasn’t said anything on the matter. We’ve been told that the Hellcat engine can handle more power easily, so it’s probably not difficult for Dodge to turn up the juice.

The latest video, called Wide Body, shows off a burnout. But with that burnout is the obvious whine of a supercharger for forced induction, just like on the Hellcat.

We believe, if the customizable plate teaser is true, that the new 2018 Demon will make 757 horsepower. When they announced the Hellcat, all the press photos had the radio station set to “70s on 7.” That was a teaser for the 707 horsepower the car makes. This new plate has a serial number of “0757.” We also know that the Hellcat HEMI can make more power than what it currently does, so we wouldn’t be surprised to see this being the final, real number.

The number 757 appears again in the “Performance Pages” video, along with the time of 7:57 on the Uconnect screen.

The News From March 2nd:

This week’s Demon developments are all about the driveline. Dodge revealed today that SRT Demon will pack a beefier, stronger driveshaft capable of handling 15 percent more torque; an upgraded rear-end gearset and differential housing; and stronger half-shafts with lower-friction bearings.

More importantly, the SRT team gave the Demon a special Launch Assist mode to combat driveline-grenading wheel hop. The system can momentarily cut engine output to quell wheel hop and «maximize traction almost instantly,» without any input from the driver, reducing driveline overload by 15-20 percent, Dodge says.

Finally, with the Demon laser-aimed at the drag strip, Dodge included a four-point harness bar for track use, available through Speedlogix. With the (assumedly optional) rear- and passenger-seat delete package, the four-point harness hardware mount points are made available, allowing customers to install the harness and bar without any cutting or drilling.

The News From February 23rd:

If you want a car to maximize its grip and acceleration at the drag strip, you have to do some suspension work. Pro drag racers use a suspension setup that’s anathema to those of us who like going around corners, ditching their sway bars and switching to softer springs and shocks in the name of weight transfer, letting the body weight shift to the rear on launch to aid traction.

You wouldn’t want that on a supercharged, Hellcat-powered SRT Demon making, we suspect, even more than the regular Hellcat’s 707 horsepower—a softer suspension would make this thing an absolute handful in anything other than a perfectly straight line, and Dodge is adamant that this drag strip dominator will be daily-driver ready.

So this week, Dodge revealed that the SRT Demon will come with an electronically controlled adaptive suspension to maximize weight transfer at the drag strip without making this big-body two-door a sloppy handler everywhere else.

Dodge started by reducing the spring rates—35 percent softer up front, 28 percent softer in the rear. The swaybars are softer, too, by 75 percent in front, 44 percent in rear. These changes won’t help the Demon’s cornering ability, but they’re all made in the name of weight transfer.

When you switch the Demon into Drag Mode, things get even more advanced. Drag-tuned Bilstein adaptive damping shock absorbers offer Firm and Soft settings; in Drag Mode, the shock absorbers switch to Soft to allow better weight transfer. As long as you’re at wide-open throttle, they’ll stay in their drag-optimized mode. Anything less than WOT, though, and the shocks will switch to their Firm setting—ostensibly, to firm up the handling if you start going off your line during a drag launch and need to ease off the throttle to avoid going sideways. In Drag Mode, Traction control is disabled, but ESC stays active, Dodge says; assumedly, if you close the throttle and the shocks firm up, ESC will cut in to keep you from spinning.

It’s a nifty adaptive suspension trick, allowing the car to become a drag-tuned softie when it’s charging ahead in a straight line, then firming back up to improve directional control the moment it’s needed. It’s the first time a production car has offered an adaptive suspension with tuning specific to the drag strip—and coupled with the Demon’s drag radial tires and everything else we’ve learned so far, it should add up to a seriously quick drag strip ET.

In a forced-induction vehicle like the supercharged Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, controlling the intake air temperature is crucial to extracting maximum performance. To accomplish this, Dodge gave the Demon a liquid-to-air charge air cooler. But that’s not all: In Drag mode, the Demon uses the air conditioning system to chill the charge air cooler. It’s a world-first feature in a production car, and Dodge says it can achieve a reduction in intake air temperature of up to 45 degrees Fahrenheit. Dodge says it’s «enough to make the engine perform like it is running in the cold Alaskan air, even after a day of runs down the strip on a hot summer day.» We figure it means you won’t have to bring giant bags of ice to put on your car’s charge air cooler and intake tract between drag runs or dyno pulls.

Engines, Ride, and Handling

The heart of this demonic Challenger is its 808-hp supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi V-8. Wait, didn’t we already say it makes 840 horsepower? That is correct, but only when the gas tank is filled with 100-plus-octane race fuel and the $1 Demon Crate package is added, which includes a special engine controller that helps unlock the engine’s full potential. Add—or should we say subtract—numerous interior pieces to make it lighter, along with the many other weight-saving methods, and Dodge claims the Demon can cover the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds at 140 mph. What does that mean? It’s (expletive) fast, that’s what.

While we haven’t tested one at our test track, we’ve driven it at the drag strip and confirmed its gut-punch takeoffs. Of course, that performance requires more than just big horsepower and torque numbers. Every Demon has a host of specialized upgrades that we’ve covered in-depth. Highlights include adjustable dampers that help transfer the weight rearward during takeoffs. The standard eight-speed automatic transmission has a trans brake that helps launch the car harder, along with other enhancements. A set of standard supersticky tires are stuffed under its four flared fenders while a pair of 4.5-inch-wide front wheels are included in the Demon Crate—tires sold separately. Although this drag-racing special was never meant for twisting tracks or winding roads, it can be driven comfortably to cruise nights and car shows. Just don’t accidentally mistake the right pedal for the left.

Передок обзавелся агрессивным 3-уровневым капотом. Уровни созданы для аэродинамики, дизайн был не главной задачей. Новые узкие фары получили диодные ходовые огни и линзы оптики. Огромная решетка радиатора полностью хромированная, как и бампер, по желанию они окрашиваются черным цветом. Низ бампера получил прямоугольные диодные противотуманные фары.

Сбоку от самой нижней части капота Dodge Ram 2019-2020 идет линия, проходящая под окном, переходящая к задней грузовой кабине. Легкое расширение колесных арок создано накладками, окрашенными в цвет кузова или черный. Внизу хромированный молдинг, выше хром присутствует как окантовка стекла и на массивных зеркалах заднего вида. Диски в базовой комплектации 20-дюймовые, но расширяются до 22-дюймовых.

Сзади классическая история пикапов – вертикальные фары, простой бампер и дверь открывающая доступ к грузовому отсеку. Отсек закрыт крышкой, под которой 1,5-кубовый объем багажника RAM. Есть опциональные дополнительные отсеки Ram Box по бокам для лимитированной версии Kentucky.

За то, чтобы окрасить пикап в два цвета, нужно заплатить 500$. Есть еще куча опций, изменяющих дизайн автомобиля. Работа над дизайном нужна для аэродинамики, коэффициент лобового сопротивления уменьшился до 0,357 Cx.

Интерьер

Смотря на внутреннее убранство Додж Челленджер Демон стоит сказать что оно выглядит хорошо, однако есть вопросы по качеству отделочных материалов. Все панели сделаны из дубового пластика, неприятного на вид. Конечно, проблема частично устраняется при помощи настоящего алюминия и алькантары, которые можно увидеть на органах управления. Что касается приборной панели, она оснащена белым фоном аналоговых приборов, а сама оцифровка «инструментария» выполнена в чёрном цвете.

Такое решение будто навивает мысли о спортивном настрое автомобиля, а также гарантирует хорошую читабельность. Тут также есть 2 ключа – черного и красного цвета. Если завести автомобиль черным ключом, автомобиль будет силовой агрегат будет генерировать 500 лошадиных силы, а при помощи красного ключа мощность вырастит до 808 «кобыл» при стандартном 92-м бензине.

Центральная консоль может похвастаться дисплеем мультимедийно-развлекательной системы. Опционально можно даже установить качественный музыкальный центр Harman Kardon, мощность которого составляет 900 Ватт. Для избавления лишней массы также решили пожертвовать шумоизоляцией, поэтому непонятно кто закажет себе такую «музыку».

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Demon’s design resembles every other Dodge Challenger model. This version, however, can be stripped down by removing the passenger-side and rear seats and swapping some luxury amenities, such as the power-adjustable steering wheel and complex audio system, for simpler alternatives. However, those who want to keep the seats so they can take their passengers for hell rides can have them added back in for just $1. The sound system and several other creature comforts—such as a power sunroof, heated steering wheel, and heated and ventilated front seats—can also be added for those who opt for the tamer package.

Overview

The Challenger SRT Demon is even mightier than the Hellcat version, boasting up to 840 horsepower and exclusive drag-racing equipment. Did we mention that it can do a wheelie, too? While the limited-edition Demon went out of production after the 2018 model year, it remains one of the coolest and craziest cars to ever wear a Dodge badge. Many of its engine and transmission goodies are now available on the Challenger SRT Hellcat Redeye. Still, even the most powerful pony-car competitors, such as the 650-hp Chevy Camaro ZL1 and the all-new 700-plus-horsepower Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, will be hard-pressed to match the straight-line acceleration of the Demon.

Компания сделала большую ставку на данную модель, оснастив её также дополнительными опциями, поэтому надеется, что новый Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat сможет соперничать с компанией Форд и Шевроле, которые надежно закрепились уже на самых высоких местах топа.
